This weekend sees the return of Sandown Bay Regatta, with the 167-year old seaside event offering a packed programme on Sunday and an Esplanade street market.
The Grand Regatta Hat Parade, a big success in 2023, has attracted further Arts Council England funding this year for organisers Sandown Carnival.
A month of hat-making
The popular showcase for eccentric headwear will be the climax to a month of community hatmaking inspired by The Regatta Hat Factory, giving all the creators a chance to show off their work and win a £100 prize for Best Hat.
The Hat Factory at 105 High Street will stay open right up to the time of the Hat Parade at 2.30pm on Sunday (11th August 2024).
Shilling: Last year was so epic
Celebrity milliner David Shilling, who designed extravagant hats for his late mother Gertrude – the Mascot of Ascot – has given the Sandown hat revival his enthusiastic backing.
He told the organisers,
“I am so glad to hear you are going a-head (pun intended) again with a hat extravaganza this summer…last year was so epic.”
Inspiration for pupils
His support has inspired Year 4 pupils at Broadlea Primary School in Lake to design hats using the theme of the sea.
The designer told the budding young hatters,
“I hope all you hat lovers, especially the first-timers, will make extraordinary, well thought out creations that are as lovely to wear as they are to behold.”
He added,
“Some of you might think about giving new life to old materials, others might try recycling materials, not just your own wardrobes but go a bit further and use treasures from your beaches and the sea.”
Such a positive impact
Meanwhile, Hat Factory participants of all ages have been overwhelmingly positive about the hatmaking experience.
Gail said,
“Brilliant High Street location and a great way to get involved in a community event, we loved it.”
Matt added,
“Fun, engaging and screen-free. Thank you!’”
And Syed praised the use of ‘biodegradable materials.’
Traditional Regatta fireworks
Sandown’s traditional Regatta fireworks return with sponsorship from the Driftwood Beach Bar, one of a series of local businesses chipping in to back the annual event.
Sandown Carnival chair Paul Coueslant, says,
“We’re hugely grateful to all who’ve come forward to partner us in 2024.
“The future of Sandown Bay Regatta is secure if local business feels part of the occasion and is keen to contribute.”
What to expect
The Regatta weekend kicks off with a Dog Show at Sandham Gardens on Saturday morning, followed by a chance for all the family to learn how to play samba drums in the afternoon.
On Sunday, there’s a full programme of family entertainment along Sandown Esplanade including a Punch and Judy show, audience participation with Horse Box Theatre and magic from the ever-popular David Randini.
The day-long fun at Eastern Beach will feature music from Soundwaves Entertainment.
