On Saturday 1st September the committee of the Isle of Wight County Playing Fields Association gathered on Church Litten to dedicate this recreation area as a QEII Jubilee Field.
The ceremony was attended by the Lord Lieutenant, Major General Martin White, the Islands Member of Parliament, Andrew Turner, Cllr. Ian Ward, vice-chairman of the IOW Council, Cllr.Peter Woodman, vice-chairman of Newport Parish Council and Alison Moore-Gwyn, CEO Fields in Trust, together with many other distinguished guests.
The ceremony was started by Andrew Turner, who gave an interesting history of Church Litten together with the story of Valentine Grey, the young chimney sweep, who died aged 10. Andrew added the comment that had, the Playing Fields Association been in place during Valentine’s young life, maybe he would have been able to play safely when not working.
The prayers of dedication were said by Rev. Marie Attwood, minister of Ryde Methodist Church, who has been appointed as Chaplain of the Isle of Wight County Playing Fields Association. She blessed the field and those involved in the work of protecting playing fields for the use of future generations.
The Commemorative Plaque was unveiled by the Lord Lieutenant who praised the work of the Playing Fields Association and those who worked to protect and preserve the fields in this time of wholesale land development.
Alison Moor-Gwyn closed the ceremony with grateful to all involved in the work on the Island, she also thanked our distinguished guests for giving up their valuable time to support our work
