Isle of Wight council leader David Pugh, has shared through the Business Green Website, details of how councils can have a huge influence on achieving national climate targets.
In the article titled, ‘A climate warning for local government’, Cllr Pugh explains that although the role of local authorities in dealing with climate change “is underestimated and misunderstood”, they “are key in supporting this growth and creating the local conditions for success.”
A leading example
He goes on to say that, “The Isle of Wight Council is a leading example in this respect, having set ourselves the challenge of becoming energy self-sufficient by 2020.”
Cllr Pugh outlines what steps the Isle of Wight council are taking to meet their 2020 target, including reduction of carbon emissions from its buildings and services by 6% per year, use of fuel-efficient pool cars, reduction in business waste and greener procurement.
