Rumours have been flying around the Island over the last few weeks about Asda wanting to build a supermarket on the Island.
The news that bids are being invited for St George’s Park made the front page of the CP last week, in which Asda chose their words carefully.
Perhaps Asda have been holding out for a different piece of land?
This morning, the Isle of Wight council have revealed that eight acres of land next to St George’s Park is going to be up for grabs.
Bids for the council owned land will be invited through advertising from from 10 July, both locally and in the Estates Gazette.
Commercial development to support Pan Meadows scheme
Isle of Wight Council Leader David Pugh said “The local authority is always keen to encourage regeneration and employment opportunities on the Island and the council has been planning on bringing this commercial development opportunity forward for some time, alongside the Pan Meadows scheme.
“In the 2009 Island-wide Retail Capacity Study Update, it is recommended that the council should meet any future demand for commercial retail outlets on sites both in main town centres and also the outskirts.
“With work already underway on Pan Meadows, we have a duty to ensure there is more commercial choice for residents although clearly there are many considerations that must be taken into account.
“We are sure we will get much commercial interest in the land and look forward to working with any potential developers to ensure any future schemes are right for the Island and its residents.”
