At last night’s Full Council meeting, the newly-elected leader Councillor Phil Jordan, quashed a myth that had been circulating which claimed that Alliance Group rules stated non-Alliance members could not be members of the Cabinet.
He was responding to a question from Councillor Peter Spink of the Empowering Islanders group.
Councillor Jordan said,
“I can confirm we don’t have any such rules as that and indeed we have reached out previously to certain other councillors and offered roles on the cabinet that haven’t been taken up. There’s a clear message here that us as councillors must qualify the way of working together, it would be a remiss to not try and capture that in some way. I don’t know what that looks like, but I’ve only been sat up here for three hours, maybe in a few days or few weeks time I might have a better idea how we do that, but the spirit is there, whether that means Cabinet members from across the council, we’ll see, but we’ll certainly look at someway of capturing the experience and qualifications and qualities of members in this chamber. Absolutely!”
He added,
“We haven’t got that many rules, it’s pretty obvious isn’t it.”
