Councillor Suzie Ellis resigns as Conservative Leader amid council leadership bid

Councillor Suzie Ellis has resigned as Conservative Group Leader at Isle of Wight council.

Councillor Ellis spoke to News OnTheWight, stating,

“Having been asked by Conservative members to lead our group in exploring how best we could take the helm of the council, I brought the Conservative Group as close as it has been during this administration to securing the leadership – however it wasn’t to be.”

Ellis: I have seen the best and the worst of politics
She went on to add,

“It has been a tumultuous few weeks during which I have seen the best and the worst of politics and I now wish to concentrate principally on continuing to work hard for my ward – and on my business and family.”

Leadership challenge
Earlier this year, Councillor Ellis, was behind a motion to remove the then-leader of the council, Lora Peacey Wilcox, with a view to replacing her as leader of the council.

This motion fell apart after Councillor Peacey Wilcox announced her resignation.

Councillor Ellis then stood for election as leader against Alliance Group member, Phil Jordan.

He was elected as new leader of the council after the Chairperson of the council, Councillor Claire Critchison, used her casting vote in favour of him.
