This week saw a new defibrillator installed on the Isle of Wight circuit, thanks to the work of Ventnor town councillor, Mark Jefferies, and support of the local community.
When Cllr Jefferies was first elected, he was asked by the then-Mayor, Stephen Cockett, to make enquiries about getting a defibrillator installed outside the Central stores in Lowtherville (Upper Ventnor).
Mark explains what happened next,
“I contacted Deborah Percy from Bonchurch who was very helpful in giving me all the information I needed. Next stop was the Isle of Wight ambulance service who explained how much we’d need to raise to purchase and install the defibrillator (approx £1,750).
“As I am on the Upper Ventnor Community Association Committee, I brought the subject up at the next meeting. Chairperson of UVCA, and colleague on VTC Cllr Steve Cooper, was 100 per cent in agreement with installing the defibrillator, as were all other committee members.”
Generous donations
Cllr Jefferies went on to add,
“We [UVCA] agreed to contribute £1,000 towards the fund. A local resident, Chris Owens, did a sponsored walk and raised most of the rest of the money, being sponsored by residents of Lowtherville.
“I would like to thank all residents who have contributed towards this vital life-saving equipment and everyone involved, including the shop staff who have been very helpful in getting me the area managers contact details etc.”
