Cowes RNLI lifeboat was dispatched Saturday morning after a large wooden yacht with a man on board was reported sinking in the River Medina, just below Medham.
When the lifeboat, helmed by Simon Hawkins, arrived on the scene the crew discovered the pump on the 50 foot Hebe was unable to cope with a serious leak.
As the boat came to rest on the river mud the crew persuaded the man aboard to transfer to the lifeboat.
He was subsequently landed ashore at Kingston, on the outskirts of East Cowes.
