Cowes Town Council withdraws objection to takeaway van’s alcohol licence

Objections have been withdrawn to an Isle of Wight takeaway selling alcohol from a Cowes residential location.

Cowes Town Council had originally objected to a plan by Eat Street to sell pre-ordered alcohol along with its meals from its base in Mill Hill Road.

A hearing was due to be heard by the Isle of Wight council on Monday, due to an objection against the licence by Cowes Town Council.

Concern for residents
The town council argued, for the one day a week Eat Street operates from that address, nearby residents may be disturbed by customers collecting orders.

It felt, if those collecting orders had already consumed alcohol, it would cause a public nuisance to neighbours.

Responding to concerns, the online catering business said it would not be a case that people could just turn up to collect food.

Order placed in advance
It said orders had to be placed the day before; alcohol would only be sold with food, and it would not encourage large amounts of alcohol through offers.

It also said it would operate an age-verification process for all alcohol sales and it was the nature of its business that customers would consume the food at home.

Objection withdrawn
Now, a town council spokesperson has confirmed, after discussions with Eat Street, councillors now understand the business activity and have withdrawn their objection.

The Isle of Wight council meeting has now been cancelled and due to the lack of objections, or officers’ concerns with the application, can grant the licence
