Isle of Wight members of 38 Degrees will this Saturday (22nd) be taking part in a day of action again the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP).
TTIP is a series of trade negotiations being carried out, mostly away from the public gaze, between the EU and US.
Members will be gathering in St James’ Square in Newport from 11am to help spread the word about this trade partnership which could have a devastating effect on all our lives.
38 Degrees says,
Negotiations for TTIP are shrouded in secrecy, but leaked details suggest the deal could:
- Let companies sue governments if they make decisions which negatively affect big business’ potential profits (like capping energy prices, or introducing plain packet cigarettes.)
- Stop future governments from rolling back privatisation of our public services, such as the NHS, energy companies, or the Post Office.
- Relax the rules which protect consumers, our environment, our welfare and health services, to much weaker US levels.
