Isle of Wight residents and anti-austerity campaigners are taking part in a rally outside County Hall this afternoon.
The budget day demo calls on Isle of Wight Conservative MP, Andrew Turner, to stop the Government’s funding cuts to the local authority.
Raising the issues
The group are using the demo to highlight:
- The difficulty the Council has faced in setting a budget (due to the massive reduction of funds from central government)
- If the situation doesn’t change, next year more services will be under threat
- Despite the news that the Department for Communities and Local Govt will ‘visit the Council to discuss the Isle of Wight’s unique situation and its finance in future years’, there is no guarantee further financial help will come, and there is no time scale set for such a visit or decision
- Our MP, Andrew Turner, voted for cuts, despite agreeing we are in a dire situation. Many Tory Councillors support him
