Derelict Ryde shop set for housing transformation after a decade vacant

A former Isle of Wight convenience store — which has been empty for over a decade — could become houses.

Bridge Stores, on Monkton Street in Ryde, closed its doors in June 2010 and has not reopened since.

Two three-bed houses
Now new plans have been lodged with the Isle of Wight council, by owner Elaine Liddy, to transform the derelict shop, which is near St John’s Road Railway Station, into two three-bed houses.

The property was sold by auction last year, where it was said the current living accommodation behind the shop was in a ‘poor state of repair’.

The front of the store has deteriorated over the years the building stood empty, but could be tidied up and refurbished under the proposals.

As part of the plans, parking spaces have been proposed at the rear.

Support from town council
Ryde Town Council has commented to say it supports the plans, subject to conditions it includes cycle racks  and an area for waste storage, and a financial contribution is made to provide affordable housing elsewhere.

The public consultation runs until 20th October 2023.
