Environment and Neighbourhood Officer (what a natty title), Rob Reed reported to the Ventnor Town Council last night that earlier in the month he’d been in the right place at the right time, to issue his first Fixed Penalty Notice to a dog owner who had tried to get away with not tidying up their dog’s mess from a public area.
As we all know, the problem of unwanted dog mess is Islandwide, but certain parts of Ventnor really do suffer from the selfish actions of a small minority of dog owners who refuse to clean up after their pooches.
Dogs in Wheelers Bay?
Cllr Milford asked for clarification on whether dogs are allowed on the beach by Wheelers Bay and Rob was able to confirm that unless there is a sign stating otherwise, it’s not an offence.
Rob was keen to add that on a helpful note – it is not an offence to place a dog waste bag in a public litter bin if there is no dog bin in the immediate vicinity, the main point being that you clear up after your dog has been.
New Laws
He did wish to make it clear to those unaware of the new laws, that failure to have a dog on a lead contravenes Article 3 (1) of the Dogs on Leads (Isle of Wight) Order 2008.
This order applies to each and every length of road including adjacent pavements and verges, within the administrative area of the IW Council.
