If you didn’t already know it, today is Donor Day.
According to market research, astonishingly 90% of the population support organ donation, but only 26% are on the Organ Donor Register.
The Donor Day Campaign is appealing to the public to join the NHS Organ Donor Register which is a confidential, computerised database holding the wishes of over 15.7 million people who have decided that, after their death, they want to leave a legacy of life for others.
Since 1 April 2008, an amazing 8000 people are currently waiting for a transplant, but less than 3000 transplants are carried out each year.
More statistics
* 800 people have donated organs
* an additional 1,607 people have donated corneas
* 2,332 people have received the gift of sight
* 2,278 people have received transplants
* 7,875 people are still waiting for transplants
Sadly, last year over 1000 people died whilst waiting for a transplant.
It only takes two minutes to register to become a donor, so as the national campaign states, why not become a donor whilst you make a cup of tea?
