If like us, you took advantage of free entrance to the Museum of Island History a couple of weeks ago to admire their new acquisition, a portrait of Giuseppe Garibaldi, then you might have seen the excellent new exhibition on the history of Girlguiding.
Suzanne Whitewood is the lady responsible for curating the exhibition which opened in October and runs until spring 2010. It includes Girlguiding IW memorabilia, photographs and artworks.
We happened to bump into Suzanne at the Guildhall, who is a mine of information, who she told us that every member of Girlguiding IW had been invited to submit an entry for display. The result is several hundreds of entries which form a “wall” of modern faces in contrast to the more formal photographs of yesteryear. It looks fabulous.
If you were a girl guide many years ago, expect to be taken back in time as you peruse the collection of uniforms, company colours and general Girlguiding memorabilia covering 100 years.
Fundraising book also for sale
In addition to the exhibition, Suzanne has also written a book titled “Moments in Time”- A hundred years of Girlguiding on the Isle of Wight.
It chronicles Guiding on the Island from the first Guide companies at Ventnor and Shanklin to the present day when Girlguiding thrives across the Island.
You can buy your copy at the exhibition in the Tourist Information Centre as well as all the Island’s TICs, the CP Shop and Waterstones.
All monies from this fund raising book will enable current members to travel to Centenary events both on the Island and the mainland.
Highly recommended.
