Thanks to Tim for this reminder of the next Symphony Orchestra event
Saturday 16th May 2015 will see the Isle of Wight Symphony Orchestra take to the Medina Theatre stage for their penultimate concert of the present season.
The concert will start at 7.15pm and thanks to the generous sponsorship of Esplanade, the Mercedes Benz garage, the music will have a strong Germanic flavour.
Wagner, Schubert and Mahler
The concert will open with Wagner’s imposing prelude to his opera Die Meistersingers von Nürnberg – his only comic opera, and probably one of his best known.
Following this grand opening will be some music that can be described as “pretty as a chocolate box”, Schubert’s incidental music to Rosamunde. Rather like the Wagner, this piece is also full of wonderful tunes.
To conclude the first half there is a welcome return to the Island for the mezzo soprano Megan Quick. Megan appeared with the IWSO a couple of seasons ago where she performed Elgar’s Sea Pictures to great critical acclaim. On this occasion she will perform Mahler’s Songs of the Wayfarer.
These four songs were originally composed quite early in Mahler’s career, but he later arranged them for voice and orchestra, and it will be that version performed at this concert.
Second Symphony by Brahms
The second half of the concert will feature just the one work, the Second Symphony by Brahms.
This is arguably the greatest of the four symphonies written by Brahms and will provide a fitting conclusion to the concert.
