Fragments installation - detail

Don’t miss vibrant new exhibition at Quay Arts Centre

Thanks to Melanie for news of this new exhibition at Quay Arts. Ed

‘Fragments’ is the title of a vibrant new exhibition opening in the Rope Store Gallery, Quay Arts, on Saturday 27th June. It takes its name from a stunning enamel tile installation made by members of the Drawing Ahead art group.

The idea for the centrepiece grew from the exhibition title, suggested by one of the members. It features individual tiles illustrating fragments of paintings, prints and other work members have done during the year. The enamelling materials were provided for the group by AJ Wells, who also framed the installation.

The exhibition features work by some of the current Drawing Ahead members showing a range of media the group have worked with during the year. It includes print-making, painting, drawing, collage, and enamel work.

Community art group
Drawing Ahead is a community art group open to people living with mental health difficulties who seek to develop their creative lives. The sessions are led by artists Tabitha Fedden and Melanie Swan. Melanie works in a range of media, including enamelling and screen-printing. Tabitha is a Printmaker and also works with painting, drawing and collage.

The group meets in the Jubilee Stores Workshop, part of the Quay Arts studio and education facility in Newport. Set in a peaceful and attractive setting between the River Medina and Seaclose Park, the Workshop has facilities for a range of Art and Craft activities.

“A joyous celebration”
Speaking of the exhibition, Melanie Swan said,

“This is a joyous celebration of our members’ work, both as a group and as individuals, as students and as artists.

“We’re very grateful for the support we’ve had from Quay Arts, the Rembrandt Gallery and, in particular, to AJ Wells who sponsor Drawing Ahead and who made these wonderful achievements possible.”

At the end of the exhibition, Drawing Ahead will present the ‘Fragments’ installation to AJ Wells in recognition of their sponsorship and support of Drawing Ahead over the years.
