Dramatic retelling of noblewoman’s life supports Arts Society and Carisbrooke Castle Museum

‘Isabella Last Queen of the Wight’ is an exciting new play written and directed by local author Glenys Lloyd-Williams.

Glenys says,

“I love the medieval period of our history and particularly wanted to raise awareness of this amazing noblewoman who found safety on our Island for many years.”

The creative portrayal of the turbulent life and times of Isabella de Fortibus (nee Redvers) allows historical facts to be slipped in easily, while the audience enjoys a bit of a roller coaster of emotion, some funny bits and some a bit rude.

Six sell out performances
There have been six sell out performances, four at Ventnor Fringe, and two at Carisbrooke Castle Museum (an authentic backdrop as it was built by our heroine).

Ellen Weeks stunningly ‘became’ Isabella (from two to 56 years old), demonstrating how and why she had to get tough in a man’s world.

A gifted and glorious cast supported her… with three puppets.

Costumes and props were sourced locally and the atmospheric poster was designed by Karl Whitmore.

The writer’s research was facilitated by a recently published book written by Johanna Jones and illustrated by Lin Watterson (shown below).

Proceeds of all events were donated to The Arts Society Isle of Wight (TASIW) and to the Museum.

Support the Museum’s outreach programme
The museum will use the proceeds to support their outreach programme. Glenys hopes to provide a manikin there so that Isabella can ‘live on’, through Curator’s talks and events. Fabulous costumes to be provided locally.

Calling all writers
Glenys would also like to provide a financial incentive to local writers through her donation to TASIW. She explained,

“We need to encourage some new, entertaining plays, so, in my last year as Chair, my committee hopes to launch a play writing competition very soon.”

If you would like to be involved in planning this competition or to any attend other TASIW art lectures or events please email [email protected] or visit our website.
