Thanks to an additional £25,000 in funding from the players of People’s Postcode Lottery the Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust will be able to take a further 50 young people in recovery from cancer sailing this year, in addition to the 675 young people they already plan to get out on the water.
Part of the funds will go towards a new East Coast Cruising trip that will see 20 young people set sail for five days of adventure on Pioneer, a beautiful 70ft classic Deep Sea Smack built in 1864, and the historic Thames river barge, Thalatta.

Luke Price (24) from Skegness, who first sailed with the Trust after he finished treatment in 2014 for Hodgkins Lymphoma, will be one of the young people on the new East Coast trip explains,
“It’s an amazing opportunity to spend time with people and bond with those who have been through the same life experiences. It’s fantastic to take part in activities that you would never normally do and build confidence in yourself. The East Coast Cruising trip is giving me the chance to return to the Trust and give back – it’s so important to feel like you can help others.”
Departing from Brightlingsea the East Coast Cruising trip will take in the Blackwater River and River Clone, as the young people get involved with everything onboard. Allowing them to test themselves in a safe and supportive environment, encouraging them to work as a team and get involved in everything from helming the boat to cooking. Ultimately building their independence and self-confidence.
Founder Dame Ellen MacArthur adds,
“We currently only work with 6.1% of the young people we could help in the UK, but with the support from the players of People’s Postcode Lottery along with the continued support and dedication of our fundraisers we are growing year on year.”

Announced at People’s Postcode Lottery’s annual Charity Gala held in Edinburgh on Wednesday 28th January, the £25,000 has increased the Trust’s running total of the 2014 funding to £200,000. Part of an amazing £58.6 million the Players of People’s Postcode Lottery have now awarded to hundreds charities throughout Great Britian and internationally since its launch in 2008.
Thanks to the players of People’s Postcode Lottery the new trip will take young people from the Bradford, Wolverhampton, Cambridge and Nuneaton area sailing on the new trip.
Once again growing the reach of the Trust; who currently run 12 trips from their south coast base on the Isle of Wight, nine trips from their Scottish base in Largs and seven other adventure activity trips throughout the country.
