Readers will remember the widespread outrage felt by residents in Ventnor when it was discovered that the hourly chime at Trinity Church, which had been in sounding out for over 150 years, was brought to a halt by the complaint of one person.
In August, Environmental Health officers tested the noise levels from the hourly chime and reported that it was above the World Health Organisation (WHO) limit. This news meant that Trinity Church faced as possible bill of around £2,000 to make adjustments so the chimes could be silenced during the night hours.
The return of the chimes
On Monday this week, Margaret Marshall got in touch via our Isle of Wight News Facebook page saying,
“Great to hear Trinity Church clock back on!!!!!”
Just switched back on
Naturally we got in touch with Hugh Wright, Priest in charge of St Catherine’s, Holy Trinity and Bonchurch churches.
We asked whether the church needed to splash out the £2,000 for adjustments to the hourly chime and he replied,
“No. We just turned it back on again! EH said they wouldn’t serve us with a notice.”
And so the chimes sound out again, on the hour, every hour.
