This weeks sees the return of the Epilepsy Cafe for 16 to 24-year-olds on the Isle of Wight.
Set up in 2022 by Caroline Harrison and her daughter, the Cafe is a place for teenagers and young people with epilepsy to meet, relax, listen to great music and share experiences.
The monthly event is free to the young people (funded by Caroline) and has proved to be a supportive space where the youngsters can talk to others who really ‘get it’.
A fun and lively space to just hang out
Caroline explains,
“It has helped to increase understanding of their condition and to build confidence with talking about it and living with it.
“It’s also a very fun and lively space to just hang out together.”
The events take place on the first Thursday of every month at Sounds and Grounds Record Store and Cafe, 12 Birmingham Road, Cowes from 4pm to 5.30pm.
Success of first fundraiser
Caroline told OnTheWight,
“We set the Epilepsy Cafe up when we moved to the Island there was nowhere for my daughter to go to meet other teenagers who faced similar challenges.
“It’s been brilliant and the group ran their first fundraising event in April for Young Epilepsy.
“We had a live ‘jukebox’, table magic and delicious cakes raising over £350.
“It was great teamwork and fantastic for them to be helping others as well as speaking up about epilepsy and helping to break down the stigma surrounding the condition.”
