Fig Wasp Fossil Proves Unchanged Evolution

Wow, here’s an amazing fact that has popped up yesterday.

Fig Wasp Fossil Proves Unchanged EvolutionAccording to the Royal Society journal Biology Letters, Dr Steve Compton, a Fig wasp expert from the University of Leeds was called into the Natural History Museum to study a fig wasp fossil, from 34 million years ago found on the Isle of Wight.

Dr Compton’s team were able to compare the 34 million year old fig wasp with its modern counterpart and discovered that evolution has remain unchanged in all that time. Isn’t that amazing?

He said “There were three very well-preserved specimens and we were able to use modern techniques to look at them in detail. What makes this fossil fascinating is not just its age, but that it is so similar to the modern species.

“This means that the complex relationship that exists today between the fig wasps and their host trees developed more than 34 million years ago and has remained unchanged since then.”

Pretty bonkers eh!
