In the last of our series of podcasts from the budget presentation to the voluntary sector at the Riverside Centre last Friday, we speak with Fiona Gwinnett, Chief Executive of the Island Women’s Refuge and Domestic Abuse Services.
Fiona talks us through the Floating Support Service and how it helps those in need on the Island.
During the presentation, Fiona was given an assurance that refuge would continue, but the floating support service would be affected by the budget cuts.
The service helps 140 women on the Island and cuts in services would have a knock on effect for homelessness, an impact on children, as well as the mental and physical health of the women seeking help.
As Fiona stresses, “it’s the stuff that keeps people’s lives together.”
She feels that the council will “roll on with plans regardless” and that there is very little people can do about it.
