The Environment Agency have issued a Flood Alert for the Eastern Yar and tributaries from Whitwell to Bembridge, advising residents to ‘be prepared’.
The alert reads:
Water levels in the Eastern Yar are high and rising. In the last 12 hours, over 30mm of rain has been recorded at Knighton. A significant amount in a short time.
From 11:00, water will be ponded on low lying land adjacent to the river throughout the river valley.
At Langbridge and Alverstone, the river will be close to the top of the riverbank. Property flooding is not currently expected.
Flooding of Golf Links Road and Moreton Common Road, Sandown may occur from 20:00 03/11/2022.
Ditches around Fort Holiday Park will struggle to drain.
Showers are forecast for today (03/11/2022).
At Alverstone, the river will continue rising until approximately 14:00 this afternoon (03/11/2022).
At Sandown, levels will not peak until tomorrow morning (04/11/2022).
Neap tides are expected over the next two days, and the river will have little opportunity to drain to sea.
We continue to monitor the forecast and will ensure the river remains free of reported blockages.
Please ensure products used to protect gardens and property from flooding are operating.
