The Isle of Wight is pretty soggy after last night’s rain and from early this morning (Wednesday) the Environment Agency has issued three flood alerts for the Island.
The first alert issued at 3.26am was for Carisbrooke and Hunny Hill on the Lukely Brook. It reads:
The water level in the Lukely Brook at Carisbrooke is high and rising. In the last 7 hours (most of which has fallen in the last hour), heavy and intense rain (30 mm) has been recorded at Carisbrooke. This is a large volume in a short period of time.
From 04:15 this morning (27/11/24) property at the bottom of Castle Street could flood from rising river levels and surface water flowing down the road.
The Aquatics Centre at Vicarage Walk near Foxes Road will also flood. Water levels will be very high at Caesars Road and Old Westminster Lane, and the river could come out of bank, flooding roads and parked cars.
Further heavy rain is forecast over the next 4 hours. This will cause the river to rise until at least 10:00 this morning (27/11/24). Our operational contractors are out in the area now, making sure the river is kept free of blockages. We continue to monitor the forecast. If you have it, please install flood protection now.
You can follow the flood alert on the EA website.
The second alert, issued at 3.36am, was for Monktonmead Brook at St Johns Road, St John’s Station and Park Road and reads:
The water level in the Monktonmead Brook at St John’s Station is high and rising. Heavy and intense rain has fallen, with 25 mm in 6 hours recorded at Ryde.
This is a large amount in a short period of time. From 04:30 this morning (27/11/24), water will begin to flow across the railway tracks. Further heavy rain is expected to impact the area for at least the next 4 hours with an additional 10-15mm expected.
The river will continue to rise until approximately 10:00. Before then, it is possible that we may issue a Flood Warning for impacts to the station depot buildings, and compounds located next to the railway line near Park Road.
Our operational staff are keeping the Monktonmead Brook clear of blockages. We continue to monitor the forecast. Please consider moving vehicles from depots located next to the river and railway line.

The third alert was issued at 4.19am and was for River Medina from Blackwater to Newport. It reads:
The water level in the River Medina at Blackwater and Shide is high and rising. In the last 5 hours, 30mm has been recorded in Cowes. This is a very large volume in a short period of time.
From 04:45 this morning (27/11/24), out of bank flooding will affect land, gardens and possibly roads at Blackwater, especially at Blackwater Hollow on the A3020 near the Mill Farm, and at Sandy Lane. By 05:30 the river will become very high at St George’s Way, Shide.
Rain will continue to impact the area over the next 6 hours with a further 10-15mm forecast. At this time, property flooding is not expected, but much depends upon the intensity of the rain which is still expected to fall. We continue to monitor the forecast. We will ensure the river remains free of any reported blockages. Road and land flooding impacts will be more significant at Blackwater. Please avoid walking or driving through flood water.
