If you were a regular attender to ‘Medina Movies’, the film screening nights at Medina Theatre and are missing your film fix since the screenings came to an end, fear not.
As you’ll see from our Film listings on our sister-site Events OnTheWight, there are plenty of alternative choices for film nights out on the Isle of Wight.
The Medina Movies night were called to a halt after the Isle of Wight council – which owns and runs the theatre – said they couldn’t justify spending £28,000 on new projection equipment.
Ventnor
The Ventnor Film Society has a great programme of screenings lined up over the next few months. It kicks off next week with Japanese drama, Like Father Like Son.
Tickets for screenings which – run fortnightly at the Ventnor Arts Club – are just £5 per person. You must book in advance to reserve your seat by emailing [email protected]
Ventnor Arts Club also has free screenings of arthouse and mainstream films to members. Temporary seven day membership and full membership details available on their Website.
Gurnard
At the opposite end of the Island over in Gurnard you’ll find the Gurnard Film Society screening films at the Village Hall.
Now in the second season of screenings, the next offering for Gurnard film lovers is the post-war classic, Bicycle Thieves.
Tickets are also £5 per person. No need to book in advance and you can take your own drinks.
Freshwater Film Club
Heading west you’ll find the Freshwater Film Club at the Freshwater Memorial Hall.
The Freshwater Film Club screenings are always introduced by film historians Tony Dalton and Tim Nicholson and the next screening (tonight 30th January) features Fellini’s La Strada.
Membership for the season is £21 (or £3 per film on the door).
Newport
Finally, Quay Arts Centre in Newport continues the tradition of screening arthouse films.
Their next screening is also tonight (Thursday), which is The Perverts`s Guide to Ideology.
Tickets are £4 on the door or £3 for concessions.
As you can see, there’s a great range of interesting films to see over the coming months across the Island.
