Many thanks Ventnor resident, Evelyn Knowles, for sharing news from Friends of Ventnor Library. In her own words. Ed
The fall-out from the Friends of Ventnor Library initiative to produce a calendar for 2013 continues to resound for the benefit of Ventnor.
It began when a member, Christine Benson, suggested we considered a calendar, this moved on very quickly to the idea of using the wonderful photographs taken in Ventnor by resident Daphne Carter. Already we had taken firm steps towards making this a real locally based project.
Supported by local business
It was then followed by amazing enthusiasm from local traders to sponsor the calendar. In all, 48 businesses contributed and that money covered the preparation and printing. Again ‘keeping it in the family’ so to speak.
Then came the tricky part, how to sell it? Again local traders did not hesitate. 16 shops put them on sale, taking no percentage for themselves, sales went on in the Library, the Botanic Garden and the Post Office. Just about the whole town was united in making it a success.
Income spend on children’s library
That success and cooperation brought the Friends of Ventnor Library £2,441.51 with which to improve the Children’s library, at a time when Council funding is pretty restricted. Tess Jessop, at the library, has been able to choose the kind of equipment and improvements that are very much needed.
Some items will be bought through the library system, however, we are delighted to say, that several items will be bought from a Ventnor supplier, putting some of the money back into the town!
Thanks to everyone
So, as I said at the start, this initiative has echoed around the town and now the children shall soon be enjoying a new look and newly equipped library.
Friends of Ventnor Library send a well-deserved thank you to everyone and, if you feel like taking part in whatever our future projects might be then follow us on www.friendsofventnorlibrary.co.uk
