Charlie Lovell Jones playing with the Symphony Orchestra

Gifted young violinist premieres Coleridge-Taylor’s Violin Concerto in G minor with Isle of Wight Symphony Orchestra

A violinist, described as one of the most gifted young players in the UK, will be the guest soloist with the Isle of Wight Symphony Orchestra at their January concert.

Cardiff-born Charlie Lovell-Jones made his Royal Festival Hall debut at 15-years-old and is now developing an enviable international reputation, having performed with numerous leading orchestras such as the BBC National Orchestra of Wales and the English Chamber Orchestra. Charlie reached the string final of BBC Young Musician of the Year in 2016.

Interest in previously marginalised composers
After graduating from Oxford University, he became a recipient of a postgraduate scholarship at the Royal Academy of Music and this has enabled him to pursue his interest in the music of less well known or previously marginalised composers.

One such composer is Samuel Coleridge-Taylor, whose Violin Concerto in G minor was written in 1912. Receiving its Isle of Wight premiere, this is a superb work that deserves more frequent outings.

Opening the concert
Malcolm Arnold was one of the most gifted and versatile British composers of the last century. His Overture, ‘The Fair Field, will open the concert and was inspired by the exuberant atmosphere of the old Croydon fairground, the site of the present-day Fairfield Halls.

The music is great fun for both orchestra and audience, featuring the sparkling orchestration for which Arnold was rightly celebrated.

Second half
The second half will feature Dvorak’s Symphony no.6. It was composed in the Summer of 1880 and is a warm and optimistic work, reflecting a happy time in the composer’s life.

Dvorak incorporates references to the traditional music of his native Czechoslovakia and this gives the work a vibrant and spirited quality.

Where and when
The concert takes place at Medina Theatre on 22nd January and begins at 7.15pm.

As at all its concerts this year, the orchestra is delighted to be supporting Ability Dogs 4 Young People.

Tickets are available from the Medina Theatre box office.
