It was with huge sadness that we awoke this morning to hear of the death of one of our greatest heroes, Gil Scott Heron.
We felt incredibly honoured to have met and interviewed the man himself in 2010, after he invited us into his backstage dressing room at Bestival.
We were showered with generosity (and Champagne) by Gil, who despite looking very frail, was more than happy to sit and talk about his career for the benefit of our readers.
The reason for the death of the 62 year old is currently unclear, but it’s understood that he feel ill after a trip to Europe.
Gil had many wise words to share during our interview, but one particular piece of advice that stuck with us was “Before you can change something, you’ve got to be aware of it. Before things can really change, enough people have to be aware.”
What an inspiration he was. Our sincerest thoughts are with Gil’s friends and family.
