Do your bit for poverty at the Isle of Wight Abseil

Christian Aid is looking for adventurous types ready to take on the challenge of abseiling 75 feet down St Mary’s Church, Carisbrooke on Tuesday 5th November to raise money to fight global poverty.

The Isle of Wight Abseil invites you to challenge yourself and perhaps even up the fear-factor by abseiling at night with fireworks in the background, to raise money to help the world’s poorest communities lift themselves out of poverty.

One person bravely taking on the challenge is Revd Peter Sutton, the Archdeacon of the Isle of Wight. He said

“It’s just under a year since I was installed as the Archdeacon of the Isle of Wight so this is a great way to mark the occasion by looking out over the Island from the top of the church tower. Part of an Archdeacon’s job is responsibility for the church buildings in the area so this will give a brilliant opportunity to examine the stonework and pointing on the tower as I abseil down.”

Charlotte Page, Regional Co-ordinator at Christian Aid, said:

“The Isle of Wight Abseil promises to be an exciting challenge and a great community event. By taking on this challenge, you will not only be challenging yourself but also the structures which keep people trapped in poverty. By going over the edge, you really will be making a difference.”

It couldn’t be easier to get involved. You can register online at www.christianaid.org.uk/abseil or call 023 8070 6969. Register for just £15 per person and pledge to raise a minimum of £60 to support the fight to end poverty.
