Green Ventnor: Episode Two

Don’t get me wrong, I’m no green purest. I do have many indulgences and I have learnt not to feel guilty about all of them. If you are to be green, you don’t have to stay at home in the dark knitting your own home grown tofu.

Green Ventnor: Episode TwoIt’s just that one has to be aware. For example, when you drive to Newport on your own and overtake the half-hourly No 3 bus it should strike a chord and lead to you making some change, if only occasionally.

I admit to being a gadget junkie and last month I saw a gizmo which measured the electricity I burn in the house.

I clamped it around the wires coming from the meter and now I am aware of my electricity demand. In KW and in annual tonnes of CO2. Now I go around the house switching off unnecessary items and my target is only 0.8kw.

I see that Slades in town are selling small photovoltaic panels for micro-electricity generation, and that is my next project, because I hate to see all that lovely sun going to waste.

Q: How many lettuces can you grow in a window box?

A: Not enough – which leads me to say that Ventnor Town Council are looking to lease some suitable land for allotments. The nature of our terraced sloping town means that there are no obvious sites, but let me know if you hear of any possibles.
