Hampshire Police Authority has awarded Challenge & Adventure a Crime Prevention Grant of £2,000. The grant was awarded by the Authority’s Community Engagement Committee for the Challenge and Adventure Activity Programme.
Challenge and Adventure, based on the Isle of Wight work with young people aged 11-16 who are referred to them by agencies. Many lack confidence and have low self esteem; some have difficulties engaging with school; and some are at risk of getting in trouble with the authorities.
Positive activities
Challenge and Adventure offer a range of positive activities over an 8 – 10 week “Challenge” period such as camping, mountain biking, climbing, water sports, archery and hiking which is set against a background of a good behaviour contract.
At the end of this “Challenge” the young people are invited to remain engaged to continue with additional activities and they have the opportunity to take part in the Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme.
The nature of the challenge is tailored to the individuals needs and abilities and involves improving self esteem, recognising achievement, qualifications and working as part of a team.
Encourage groups to come forward
Cllr Peter Kent Mason, Chair of the Community Engagement Committee of Hampshire Police Authority, said: “It is pleasing to see projects geared towards providing activities for young people.
“The Authority assesses applications for crime prevention grants throughout the year, and we would encourage any group that works to reduce crime or mitigate the impact on victims to consider applying.”
