Thanks to OnTheWight reader Seb for the heads-up on today’s Google Doodle.
If you’ve been onto Google, you would’ve seen that it’s once again celebrating International Women’s Day. An global event that takes place every year on 8th March.
According to Wikipedia, the first national Women’s Day took place in the US way back in 1909, “following a declaration by the Socialist Party of America”.
Each year the Day has a theme, last year the UN declared the theme, ‘Empower Rural Women – End Hunger and Poverty’.
This year, the UN theme for International Women’s Day 2013 is ‘A promise is a promise: Time for action to end violence against women’.
This is a particularly pertinent theme given the atrocious rape and murder of an Indian student at the end of last year.
So, a tip o’ the hat to all those women who have helped make a change for the better in the world.
