Have your say on possible change to Constabulary name

Police and Crime Commissioner, Donna Jones, is asking Island residents to take part in her consultation on whether to change the name of Hampshire Constabulary to include the Isle of Wight.

The Commissioner has launched a consultation to ask if residents would back the name change and has written to the Home Secretary to request their support for the change of name, as it would require an amendment to primary legislation, namely the Police Act 1996.

Jones: Don’t want Islanders to feel like they’re a bolt-on to Mainland
Donna Jones Police and Crime Commissioner, said,

“Although separated from the mainland by the Solent, the Isle of Wight is very much part of the Hampshire policing area with much of the same community safety issues as other parts of the county. It is also a community with a strong sense of identity. I wish to promote their interests and respond to the concerns specific to the Island in a way that recognises their unique place in the area.

“In terms of the name, I don’t want people who live on the Island to feel like they’re a bolt-on to the Mainland. They are not. The Isle of Wight is unique. I am asking residents if they would support the ‘Isle of Wight’ being incorporated into the name of the force. There would be no rebranding exercise; the name change would be phased in.”

It seems to me that the Conservative leadership designed the tender process on this specifically to exclude a respected local organisation for reasons that have not been made transparent.

Does the Law Centre supports those in the community who might be affected by the Councils cuts to services?

Historically I have always been a floating voter, but I am becoming increasingly incensed by the questionable antics of this controlling group of Conservative Councillors who are really beginning to show their true colours.

It all makes sense now. The new advice service under one roof at County Hall on the ground floor, plus the removal of the Law Centre means that nowhere on the Island can you get free impartial advice. I would assume every service from Age UK, CAB, etc using the County Hall premises would not be able to go against Council policies etc so expect bailiffs entering… Read more »

Spot on. It is particularly concerning how CAB have sacrificed their independence. Moving into County Hall has sent a message that CAB is part of the system, rather than a source of advice against the system.

It’s not about being ‘against the system’, it is more a point of being genuinely independent of it. The current development is a very worrying one, matched by the Council indicating it might have to review where it places its significant advertising budget, which will have put the shivers down the County Press, who as a consequence might be less inclined to report on Council business, warts… Read more »
