Gilten market with H Biles in the rear

Historic Gilten Market returning to the Isle of Wight next month

After a two year absence, when the show and sale was moved to Salisbury Auction Centre, the Gilten Market is returning to the Isle of Wight.

The event is a celebration of Isle of Wight Livestock farming, where livestock keepers show off the best of their cattle and sheep, in competition for prestigious awards.

An historic Isle of Wight Event
The Gilten Market is an historic Isle of Wight event, held under the patronage of the High Sheriff, dating back to the 1800s.

Originally held in the Newport town Market, the event has moved home several times, since that markets closure, in the early 1980s.

Hosted at Tapnell
The return has been enabled by the kind permission of the Turney family, who will be hosting it at their Tapnell Farm complex, on 6th December.

This years show is set to see a bumper line up in the prime cattle and lamb classes, where the committee are pleased to welcome several new competitors, bidding to take the prizes off some of the more experienced showmen, including the reigning champions.

Judging starts from 9.30am, with the events highlight, the “Guilding of the horns of the Champion Beast”, being conducted at 12 noon, in the sale ring.  Local and mainland butchers will then have the opportunity to buy stock, in good time to fill their shelves for Christmas.
