The hovercraft from Portsmouth to Ryde was delayed four hours yesterday due to lack of air.
Managing director of Hovertravel Neil Chapman says the delay was caused by a rare collision of a high pressure zone meeting a low pressure zone causing an atmospheric gyre resulting in a temporary lack of air over the Solent.
“Air is essential to hover travel and while Hovertravel apologizes to our customers for the inconvenience this was a matter we have no control over.”
“Captain Price reported that he throttled the hovercraft engines to full power upon entering the gyre to counter the absence of air but could not compensate for the lack of atmosphere as the hovercraft settled down onto the sea.”
“Fortunately the gyre was temporary and soon passed of its own accord.”
No memory of delay for passengers
Oddly enough, passengers aboard the delayed passage have no recollection of the event as the temporary lack of air pressure reduced oxygen levels as well causing them to fall asleep during the delay.
It was only upon arrival in Ryde four hours late that questions started to be asked about the circumstances that caused the delay.
