Seventeen months since the Island’s last local election, how well do you know the Isle of Wight council?
Current councillors, sitting on the Island’s unitary authority, were voted in on 6th May 2021 after a shake-up saw the Isle of Wight Conservatives lose their majority and control of the council.
Conservatives the largest group
Now, although the Conservatives are not the ruling party on the Isle of Wight Council, they are the largest group.
The Alliance Group — made up of independent, Our Island and Green Party councillors — was voted in to rule the authority at the end of May last year — by 20 votes to 18 — and Cllr Lora Peacey-Wilcox became council leader.
Current split
Of the 39 seats on the Isle of Wight council, there are now:
- 18 Conservatives
- 17 Alliance Group
- One independent Labour
- One Labour
- One Liberal Democrat
- One Vectis Party
Cllr Geoff Brodie left the Alliance Group just four months after it took control.
In February, the Conservative changes to the Alliance Group’s budget were approved on the casting vote of chair Cllr Brodie, showing how tight the split is in the council.
