Hudson Barker’s kind-hearted approach and perseverance earns him Responsible Angler Trophy

Fifteen-year-old Hudson Barker may not be the Isle of Wight’s most successful angler – but he has landed a trophy in recognition of his sensible conduct during a season of fishing from Wightlink’s Ryde Pier.

The Island Free School pupil from Shanklin has been named the ferry company Most Responsible Angler of 2022.

Every year, as part of its Wightlink in the Community programme, Wightlink gets together with the Vectis Boating and Fishing Club to reward the young fisherman or woman who has conducted themselves best over the course of a year’s angling on Ryde Pier.

This year, Hudson earned the award after impressing club officials with his perseverance as well as his attitude to angling.

Colin Webb of Vectis Boating and Fishing Club says,

“Hudson tries so hard and always gives 110 per cent – even though most of the fish elude him.

“Despite the lack of reward for his efforts, he never gives up. He is also so kind-hearted and takes great care of the fish he does catch before returning them to the sea.”

Hudson started fishing after joining the Vectis Boating and Fishing Club’s annual Fishing Frenzy event during the school summer holidays.

Colin adds,

“Because of his age, this year marks the last time he will be able to compete so it is great for him to sign off with the responsible angling trophy. He is a worthy winner.”

Wightlink Chief Executive Keith Greenfield says,

“Well done Hudson – it’s great that his perseverance has earned him this year’s trophy.

“We are really pleased to support Vectis Boating and Fishing Club’s events from Ryde Pier and congratulations to Colin and his team – and all those young anglers who take part in the annual Fishing Frenzy – for another successful and rewarding year.”

This year’s trophy has been sourced from Sculptglass of Arreton as part of Wightlink’s policy to work with local suppliers whenever possible.
