Many thanks to Martyn for the latest on the IOW Car Club Championships. Ed
The third round of the IOWCC championship was held at Knighton Sandpit on Sunday.
The first Unsealed event brought forward some new faces and also a new batch of cars prepared for the ‘off road’ surface.
Hot and dusty was the order of the day and cars were creating plumes as they raced around the sixty second circuit.
Paul Wills driving an XR4x4 set the early time to beat with a 65:70 in his usual flamboyant style, Russell Thomson in a borrowed 200sx seemed to be out there just for fun pleasing the spectators with his drifting style and Dan Westwood owner of said car decided that going around the piles of sand were not enough instead parking it on a gravel heap, causing much amusement.
Competition looked close as the times began to tumble, Dan Morgan in the West Wight Teams Golf set a time of 62:89 blitzing everything else out there by at least a second, Matt Trott came back at him with a 62:03 in the same car.
Matt then took the lead with a 61:76 but Dan countered with a 61:58 which quite frankly looked unbeatable.
Andrew and David Leppard both looked fast in their 205GTI and Andrew gave Dan a scare when he popped in a time of 61:93 but the day looked like Dan’s for the taking.
Having had trouble all day with the Swift the South East Wight team were on the verge of giving up, however one final repair to their car and Toby Allen, last years overall champion, took the car out for one final time and managed to pull a time from nowhere of 61:50 eclipsing all that had gone before him.
Quite remarkable in a car that 5 minutes earlier sounded like a tractor, an excellent drive by what is becoming a very accomplished driver.
Lady driver of the day has to go to Vicky Cox who steered her 205GTI to fourteenth place just three seconds off the pace.
I asked Toby what he thought of his first ever event win, he replied “Its about time, last year was all about consistency but this year will be all about winning. I am overjoyed at beating the West Wight team”
Thanks must be extended to the land owner, our sponsors and especially to Rebecca French for her awesome Marshal organisation skills.
