This stretch of road (pictured above and below) – the main entry point into Ventnor from the east and used by buses and delivery lorries, as well as visitor and residential traffic – has surely got to be one of the worse road surfaces on the Isle of Wight.
Not only is the surface bad, but its position – on a bend, down an incline – adds to the danger to those who have to use it.
Understood to have been originally scheduled to be re-surfaced in 2016, according to the town’s clerk, David Bartlett, it is now scheduled to be tackled way off in 2019/20.
He says the Ventnor Town Council had, some months ago, asked for the work to be rescheduled, but to no avail.
A direct impact on business
Adrian Wheeler of Church Street Motorcycles, based in the town, shared the photo on social media earlier today, warning his customers to be careful of the dangerous road surface.
He told OnTheWight,
“Island Roads’ [lack of attention to] the road network in and around Ventnor is having a direct impact on our ability to do business in our outlying town.
“With the Undercliff closed and the dangerous state of some of the local roads it is very hard to encourage two wheeled travellers to come here.
“As one of the few local businesses who regularly attract clientele from all over the Island we feel very let down by our council and local councillors.”
David Bartlett said he had already added the issue to an internal Ventnor Town council meeting agenda for this coming Wednesday.
Is this the worst?
Does this look like the worst road surface on the Isle of Wight? Have you seen worse? Let us know where and if possible send us a photo so we can compare.
We like this sensible suggestion by Jon-Paul Charlo,
@ChurchStreetMc @IslandRoads I think the person deciding which roads need doing should make their rounds on a motorcycle!
