Isle of Wight artist, Joanne Hummel Newell, has had a piece of her work (see below) selected to appear in the Royal Academy’s coveted Summer Exhibition.
On hearing the news, Jo told OnTheWight,
“I’m very pleased to have a painting in this year’s Summer Exhibition. It’s one of those old institutions who still have traditions, such as a varnishing day where the artists go along and have first glimpse of the show, and would traditionally retouch their varnish.
“I hold the judging panel artists, lead by Hughie O’Donoghue, in high regard and it’s overwhelming to think that my work has been validated by them.
“My little painting will show alongside artists whose work I’ve pawed over in books, it’s a great privilege.”
TV broadcast
You’ll be able to see who Jo will be exhibited alongside during a programme hosted by Kirsty Wark, Alastair Sooke and Morgan Quaintance on BBC2 on Saturday night (7th June at 7pm) looking behind the scenes of the Summer Exhibition.
Open Studio
As usual, Jo will also be taking part in Open Studios at the Depozitory at the end of July, but also has a solo show curated by Aspex Gallery, Portsmouth, in October.
