Thanks to Jan for this latest news from the poultry world. Ed
The 15th and 16th November saw poultry exhibitors from around the UK congregate in Telford for the Poultry Club of Great Britain’s National Show. A host of exhibitors from the Isle of Wight were among them, including Jed Dwight (pictured below), who had arrived back in the UK on the Tuesday prior, after visiting a Poultry Show in Columbus, Ohio.
Carole Rann, and her granddaughter Ella Rann-Avery took the highest award of the Islanders that attended, winning Champion Bantam Duck and Reserve Champion Waterfowl out of around 600 exhibits with their Black East Indian Duck (pictured above). This confirmed the strength of Waterfowl as a section on the Island, with Jed having taken the award for Champion Waterfowl at the same show in 2012.
Excellent results for Islanders
Other Island exhibitors did exceedingly well, taking section awards and class placings in strong classes, sometimes having as many as 20 birds in a single class.
Asked about the show, Jed said,
“The Poultry Club of Great Britain’s National Show is the prime event for poultry exhibitors in the UK, and sees poultry enthusiasts flock from all over the country, and visitors from all over the world to attend the show.
“This is what makes even a prize card so valuable, and is why it is so pleasing to see Islanders doing so well. Carole & Ella’s win really is a fantastic achievement, and one I’m sure they’ll treasure for many years to come.”
Qualified to judge
Jed was also successful in managing to pass his sixth judging test qualification, leaving just two left to complete before reaching the ultimate ‘A Panel’ status, which will qualify him to judge every variety of poultry, and reduce the average age of an A Panel judge fairly dramatically.
The Isle of Wight Poultry Club holds monthly meetings in Northwood throughout the winter months, as well as shows throughout the year.
Jed will again also be heading a poultry section at next year’s County Show, due to take place on the 27th June, which he has promised will be an eye catching feature of the show.
