Island Roads staff have given their time to help the annual winter maintenance programme at the historic Needles Old Battery.
Four members of Island Roads staff spent a day at the former coastal defence site owned by the National Trust undertaking a number of tasks including painting, preparation and general tidying.
Volunteering programme
They gave their time under Island Roads’ volunteering programme under which the company encourages staff to take two days a year supporting local good causes. So far this year, around 140 days have been spent by Island Roads staff in support of these good causes.
The Needles Old Battery and New Battery attracts thousands of visitors every year, to enjoy the best views of the famous rocks and lighthouse and learn the history of this important site.
Every winter the buildings are given a new coat of paint and this is largely undertaken by volunteers. This year however, they were delighted to be joined by the Island Roads helpers.
Many hands made light work
Alex Tunnicliffe, Island Roads facilities coordinator said:
“The volunteering day at The Needles Battery was a very enjoyable day. It’s a spectacular location and we were able to have a look around areas that wouldn’t normally see. The day went quickly even though we were painting and it was a bit chilly.
“Many hands made light work of quite a big task and the National Trust staff were delighted with what we achieved. All in all a great day and we even saw a flypast by a Spitfire.”
Giving something back to the community
Chris Bridger, Footways Supervisor, said:
“I enjoyed volunteering at the Needles Battery; it was great fun and we had a laugh while at the same time learning about this part of the Island’s history and giving something back to the community.”
Scott King, Visitor Experience Officer for the National Trust said:
“By giving their time to the National Trust and helping with our Winter Maintenance programme, volunteers from Island Roads have made an enormous and valuable impact on our annual conservation programme for this site of special historical interest.
“Those who care about our special place, those who have loved it previously, and those who are yet to enjoy it will benefit from their commitment. Thanks to Island Roads, we had great fun with an enthusiastic team who we hope will continue to support the work we do. Thank you, sincerely, from all of us at The Needles Battery.”
