A News OnTheWight reader recently contacted us regarding concerning incidents of door scams they’ve experienced.
These scams involve individuals falsely claiming to represent charities and asking for monetary support.
A suspicious visitor
The latest incident involved a personable young man asking for donations under the guise of helping to take Island children to London hospitals.
The reader told us that the man on his doorstep declined offers of cash.
Further raising suspicions, he failed to provide any evidence confirming the legitimacy of the charity he claimed to represent.
Security concerns raised
What was most alarming, however, was his request for individuals to commit to a weekly donation.
He was keen to obtain the resident’s name and bank account details, a significant security concern.
A warning to residents
Residents are reminded of the perils of providing bank details to strangers, especially at the door.
It’s important to always verify the authenticity of those claiming to represent charitable organisations.
If you experience a scammer on the Isle of Wight, you should report them to the Isle of Wight council’s Trading Standards department.
