Isle of Wight resident, Matt Smith, has launched a national campaign calling on the Government to tackle the discrimination experienced by those living and working on UK islands.
Matt has set up two online petitions calling on the Government to make it illegal for vendors to refuse to deliver to UK islands.
Gaining interest
A petition on the Government’s own petition Website has already attracted over 2,000 signatures, whilst the same on the 38 Degrees Website has over 600.
The petitions call for:
Make the refusal by vendors to supply goods to island postal residence illegal.
The UK is composed of over 30 inhabited islands, which supply essential goods and services to the UK economy and whilst the UK mainland can enjoy these products and services, the islanders themselves are unable to acquire goods from an increasing number of mainland distribution companies
Support from Scotland
The petition has gained support from at least one Scottish MP, Tavish Scott, reports the Shetland Times.
Tavish says the petition highlighted “the need for a better, affordable service that local people can use”.
OnTheWight has contacted the Isle of Wight Conservative MP, Andrew Turner, at the weekend to ask whether he’ll be supporting the aims of the petition.
At time of publishing, we’d not heard back.
