The plans for this year’s Isle of Arts Festival just get better and better. Gilly tells us about a fantastic opportunity for Island writers and performers. Please share with your friends and family. Ed
Stage Right is a new venture set up to showcase Island writers and performers.
This is an opportunity to watch original work being staged at 2pm on Sunday 22 April 2012.
The performance can be in any genre – radio play, musical, thriller, tragedy, comedy, or wherever the writers’ and performers’ imaginations may lead.
Packaged up into 12 minutes
The only limitations are the approximately 12 minutes runtime and the props and set that the cast can carry on themselves.
This will be an entertaining, seat-of-the-pants ride for the audience, writers and performers alike.
A judging panel will be on hand throughout to decide on the winning performance.
Looking for fun and sincerity
We welcome a broad range of ages, experience and subject matter. The key thing we are looking for is, no matter how much fun you have along the way, that you approach this project with sincerity.
Full details of whatʼs involved follow. And if you are interested in staging your play, complete and return the application form to us by Friday 9 March.
Your play
It should be an original performance of about 12 minutes duration (no longer than 15 minutes, no less than nine minutes).
It can be a short complete work, or an extract from a longer piece.
The performance can be in any genre, for example, radio play, musical, thriller, tragedy, comedy.
The author/writer of the work must be the individual who applies to us to stage it at this event.
It does not have to be a new work so long as it meets all the above criteria
Casting your play
If you are a writer in search of a cast, prop makers or any other kind of artistic assistance, donʼt despair.
We will be advising Island dramatic societies about the Stage Right venture and will be happy to make introductions.
Staging at the festival
We will provide a raised stage area. The size is still to be confirmed, but no larger than 20ft x 12ft.
However your performance may extend beyond this stage as you deem appropriate.
We will provide a basic sound system, namely a boundary zone microphone above the stage area.
Any additional microphones must be by prior agreement with us.
We will provide a basic lighting rig (spotlight and a couple of colour washes), so your director can pre-agree some simple effects like a colour wash or spotlight in advance.
Props and set dressing will be limited to what your cast can carry on with them.
Judging
A panel of judges will decide on the overall winning performance. Thereʼs no financial reward, but the winner will be able to bask in the limelight and will also receive a modest trophy. Age and experience will be taken into account in the judging process.
What next?
Complete the application form and return to us by Friday 9 March. We also require a token entry fee of £10. This is to ensure committed entries and to help fund the trophy.
