Lottie Laidler, a seasoned athlete from the Isle of Wight, has been selected to represent Great Britain in flag football at the World Championships in Lahti, Finland, this August.
To support her journey, Lottie has launched a GoFundMe appeal to raise money for travel expenses. She is hoping to raise £1,500.
A decade of dedication
Lottie has been playing flag football for around ten years. Her journey began at university and has flourished since then.
She currently plays for the Coventry Cougars Women’s Team, a formidable team that has won nine national championships and one international championship.
Local training with Wight Raptors
In addition to her commitments with the Cougars, Lottie also trains with a local team on the Island called the Wight Raptors.
The Wight Raptors train on Monday nights in Wotton. Although the squad is small and primarily male, it is steadily growing.
The Raptors currently compete in the Outlaw League and are placed fifth.
Understanding flag football
Flag football, as Lottie explains, can be compared to tag rugby and serves as an alternative to traditional rugby.
The game is faster-paced and requires more agility and sprinting, with teams consisting of five players each.
At major tournaments, teams travel with a squad of twelve to ensure a well-rounded group.
Aiming for Olympic glory
Lottie has already competed in numerous international tournaments and two European Championships for Great Britain.
However, the upcoming World Championships in Lahti represent her most significant challenge yet.
Looking ahead, Lottie aspires to participate in the 2028 LA Olympics, where flag football will be featured.
Her ambition is clear,
“I hope this is something I can go on to achieve.”
