Islanders came together on 1st December, for Mountbatten Isle of Wight’s annual Light up a Life remembrance event, in celebration of loved ones who have died.
Among those attending at the hospice in Halberry Lane, Newport, was Leigh Sargeant from family-owned Jaks Hair and Beauty in Newport, who came with his family to honour his father, Richard, who died in July.
Leigh shared,
“We were nervous because our grief is still so raw.
“It was also our first time back at the hospice since Dad died. I’m so glad we went— it helped us feel connected and not on our own.”
Hartley: Grateful for the opportunity
Mountbatten CEO Nigel Hartley welcomed attendees, saying,
“Your presence makes this event so special and we are grateful for the opportunity to share this moment with you.”
The service featured traditional Christmas carols led by the Salvation Army Band and Mountbatten Choir, as well as poignant readings by hospice staff.
A particularly moving moment saw the crowd hold candles aloft while local performer, Beth Berry, sang ‘Supermarket Flowers’ by Ed Sheeran, with loved ones’ names displayed on-screen and the hospice’s Christmas tree lit in their memory.

Leigh said,
“The event was handled with such sensitivity and care.
“It brought together so many families united in grief, reminding us of Mountbatten’s incredible dedication to caring for our Island when we need it most.
“Before Dad was transferred from St Mary’s Hospital to Mountbatten, we hadn’t had any contact with the hospice. The care we received was incredible. We were able to spend precious time together and create fond farewell memories.
“Mountbatten gave Dad the best possible end.”
The evening concluded with a heartwarming performance by the TrebleMakers children’s choir, singing ‘It was on a Starry Night.’
Guests then gathered inside the John Cheverton Centre to enjoy mulled wine, and mince pies donated by Grace’s Bakery, and to leave personal dedications on a Christmas tree.
