Crucial traffic orders to improve safety around a new football ground for the Isle of Wight have been approved.
It will mean the speed limit on Fairlee Road, between Island Harbour and the Racecourse Roundabout and on Whippingham Road, on the approach to the roundabout, will be reduced from 50mph to 40mph.
Delegated decision
The change was approved by Cllr Phil Jordan, the Isle of Wight Council’s cabinet member for infrastructure and highways, in a delegated decision made on Thursday.
The plan had earlier been met with mixed reactions – concerns were raised about whether drivers would stick to the new rules and if the designated entrance and exit points would trigger accidents.
Increase public safety
However, one comment on the Isle of Wight council’s Website said the change would increase public safety and the drop in speed limit was praised.
The decision is subject to a call-in period.
The new football ground will be the home of Newport FC.
Alternative ground
While it waits for its new stadium, it has been based at Smallbrook Stadium and recently announced it would be returning to East Cowes Vics’ Beatrice Avenue, for the first time since 2021.
Isle of Wight Council members have until 25th May to raise issues about the decision and if it is unopposed it can be put into place after 26th May .
