At the beginning of this week, the Trustees of the Island Law Centre announced they were having to close the Law Centre after nearly 20 years.
It was only seven months ago that the Isle of Wight council stepped in save the Law Centre, which provides vital free legal advice to residents with housing, welfare benefits, debt and employment issues.
IWC: Closure is truly regrettable
News OnTheWight asked the Isle of Wight council on Monday why funding that had been made available to the Law Centre last year had not been extended.
An Isle of Wight council spokesperson replied today (Friday) saying,
“It is truly regrettable to learn of the Law Centre closure as they and the staff, whom we thank for their hard work, have provided a service to many Islanders over the years.Â
“When the council was advised of a proposed closure last year, the local authority was able to provide additional financial assistance from one-off funding.
“Unfortunately, the temporary funding utilised is no longer available. Due to unprecedented current financial pressures the Isle of Wight council is unable to allocate further funding.”
Other forms of support
They spokesperson went on to add,
“We were already working with all existing providers and clients to ensure no household falls between the gaps. Where practical, arrangements being provided to households will be in place before the services finish. Where this is not possible, temporary arrangements will be made.
“Statutory Housing services are in position to meet the needs of any households that find themselves at risk of homelessness in line with the legislative requirements. There are also various helplines and supports available for specific issues.”
